So there you are in the recreation park, being happy..taking pictures with your DSLR camera, laughing around with your friends who owned the same type of cameras, changing the thousands-of-dollars worth of different type of lens, just to get that perfect type of picture you saw on the internet the other day. You thought, “Hey, maybe I can try that..”
You went home, still feeling happy and fresh for having another great day out with you friends and your beloved cam, you posted on Facebook pictures of you and your friends that you’ve edited a bit to make it nicer with the little picture effects. And not long after, your friends went online too, and all of you chit-chatting about the day you had with each other. Promising to do it again, if given the chance.
Seems like a simple and ordinary scene? =)
Situation 1:
Standing quite a distance from you and your friends at the park, are another teenager with his middle-class family, oblivious to his surrounding because he’s too busy observing you, starting to feel the wanting in his heart..to have what is YOURS..
Do you notice, when he told his mum about his wish to have a camera like YOU, his mum shakes her head with that bitter smile on her face? Trying to tell her son, HOPING that he would understand…that they cannot AFFORD it?
Look closer, and you’ll see the pain in the boy’s face..when his wish can’t be fulfilled.
Look again, and you’ll see how his fingers curled into an angry fist. Angry towards himself, his family, his mom and dad, or even, God..for not making him as someone who can afford the things that you have.
Situation 2 :
An ordinary girl from an ordinary family saw pictures of you and your friends on Facebook. She went through your album, looking at the beautiful pictures with great anxiety. Wishing that she could produce great pictures from that same camera. Wishing that she could experience the same thing as YOU did.
But then, the thought of her dad came to her mind. With his torn up trousers, t-shirt stained with dirt, having another long, hard day at work. She cursed herself for wishing something that she knew she couldn’t have„„AGAIN. So, she shuts that longing feeling inside. Time after time, she has become an observer to your activities, all your photos..because she feels like that’s as close as she can be to have what YOU have..
Moral of the story : Sometimes, we didn’t mean to be boastful. We didn’t mean to show off materialistic things to other people. We know that what we have is only temporary, Allah lends it to us to test our imaan. But then………… =) Be greatful for what you have, because you know that not all of us can have what is ours.
